Top Surgery and Manual Therapists: Practitioner Training

SLIDING SCALE $60-150
This session will aim to provide a foundational overview of approaches to care for folks before and after gender affirming top surgery. Suitable for manual therapists and any practitioners wishing to learn more about supporting clients through this process.
Workshop topics will include:
Developing treatment plans in collaboration with clients
Building allied health teams
Musculoskeletal approaches when preparing for surgery
Recovery and scar remediation
Facilitating grounding and navigating embodiment
Holding complexity moving away from good vs bad +gendered dichotomies.
ACCESS:
- All reference videos will have closed captions in english
- Workshop will feature powerpoint slides via zoom screen share. These slides will use font size ranging 20-30 and feature diagrams and schematics of anatomy. Effort will be made to make these as large as possible
- Auslan interpreters are not available for the live workshop but a replay will be made available with closed captions
- The workshop will run for three hours with a break in the middle
A NOTE ON ME
This workshop will be run by me, Egan! I am a queer non binary person and I have not had top surgery.
This workshop has been put together using the invaluable research and anecdotal contributions of those with lived experience as well as my professional experience working with folks who regularly bind and folks preparing and recovering from chest surgery.
I would like to extend my acknowledgement and gratitude to the trans and non binary folks that have and continue to share their experiences in the name of furthering care for others.
Bodies and Binders: Practitioner Training
This session will aim to provide a foundational understanding of approaches to care for folks who wear chest binders. Suitable for manual therapists and any other practitioners wishing to learn more about binding.
Workshop topics will include:
- what is a chest binder
- trauma informed basics for clients who wear binders
- what affect does chest binding have on biomechanics
- key muscular releases for binder related pain
- movement prescriptions for self soothing for folks who bind
When: 17th of June 11am AEST

ACCESS:
- All videos will have closed captions in english

- Exercises/movement prescriptions will be demonstrated and participants will be invited to join. This will involve thoracic mobilising either in a seat, on the floor or standing, breath exercises, and assisted releases via the hands and arms. All of these will be optional and presented in terms of core concepts as opposed to specific technical exercises.
- Auslan interpreters can be organised upon request.

We will discuss what trauma is, how it impacts physical and mental health, understanding trauma responses and working well with clients who have experienced trauma.

Over 3 hours this session aims to leave you with a deeper understanding of what it means to bind, how to ease your body through the negative impacts of binding and also equip you with enough information to navigate your long term relationship with your binder in a way thats right for you.

Skin care whilst binding
Self massage approaches
